DVSS Leadership class donates giant chess board to town

The Drumheller Valley Secondary School Leadership class purchased and then donated a giant chess board to the Town of Drumheller for the planned downtown plaza.

The class was awarded a $500 grant from the Educational Partnership Foundation and used the funds, plus additional funds they raised from Total Control Security, to purchase the board and pieces.

"We liked the chess set idea because it is so unique," said Leadership student Nadine Turner. "By its very nature it should draw attention and it will hopefully get played with by everyone."

"Having students take the initiative and donate this feature for the plaza was such a great surprise. We can't wait to find a home for it," said town economic development officer Julia Fielding.

The downtown plaza is a potential project for the town, which is exploring the possibility of closing the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Centre Street to create a walking and meeting space.
