Police continue home invasion investigation

RCMP new cruiser Sept 2014

Police are still looking for clues as to the identity of a suspect who sexually assaulted a Drumheller resident in their home, in an apparent random attack.

On Sunday January 10, at about 10 p.m., a resident in a local apartment building opened his door to a male requesting to use their phone. The culprit forced their way into the home and sexually assaulted the occupant.

The Drumheller RCMP detachment, along with the Drumheller General Investigation section are investigating. A police dog unit from Wetaskiwin was brought in to attempt to pick up a track on the culprit.

RCMP issued a press release on Friday morning. Staff Sergeant Jeremie Landry of the RCMP explains they have to balance a number of issues when releasing information the public, as a warning or to ask for assistance.

"We don't want to alarm the public but public safety is paramount," he said.

Another aspect taken into consideration is the integrity of the investigation.

Police stress to the public to protect themselves by verifying the identity of strangers before opening the door of their home to them.

The culprit is described as about 5’10’’, wearing blue jeans, a green sweater and a light blue baseball cap. The person wore a black balaclava to cover their face.
