CELS
Aline

1930 - 2022

I lift up my eyes to the hills—
from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
(Ps. 121.1-2 NRSV)

Aline Cels née Richaud passed away in Drumheller on 26 January 2022, aged 91. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Louis & Bertha, brother Leon, sisters Yvonne Dechief & Helen Clark, husbands Marcel Augey & George Cels, and grandson Eric Augey. Aline grew up in the village of Forget, SK. She married the boy next door, Marcel, and they raised their family in Stoughton until his premature death. Aline and her second husband, George, moved on to Colorado, Red Deer, Kelowna, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Thompson (Man.), before retiring happily to Drumheller. Wherever Aline went, she found community and made a welcoming home for her family and for friends, old and new. Aline’s faith in God’s grace showed in her gratitude, loyalty, unconditional love, and the ability to leave troubles behind and make the best of each day. The family is grateful for the care Aline received from the staff at the Sunshine Lodge, her physicians, and her extended care nurses at Hanna and Drumheller. Please remember Aline and her family in your prayers, and enjoy an extra sliver of pie, or two, in her memory.

Condolences to the family of James (Jim) Courtney Carlson

CARLSON
James (Jim)
Courtney

December 12, 1940 - January 21, 2022

Jim passed away peacefully in Innisfail on January 21, 2022.
In Jim’s words: “I was born in Stettler, Alberta in 1940 and I was raised on a farm and attended a one-room schoolhouse. (Stewartwyn). After leaving school, I did a carpentry apprenticeship and spent most of my working life in construction-related occupations. I lived in various places in B.C. but moved permanently to Drumheller in 1998 and began painting seriously.”
Jim lived a great big life. For decades he called the Queen Charlotte Islands home. Working in construction, a professional scuba diver working underwater pipelines and an auxiliary RCMP member. For over 20 years he ran a halfway house in Powell River, working with people who were mandated to be there but often didn’t want help or were struggling with finding their path back into society.
As a founding member of the Badlands Art Gallery, Jim’s art and relationships with other artists became a significant part of his life. His passion for art was not just about his own work but fostering an environment for both serious and future artists to flourish. Jim’s art is a part of the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat, AB and has travelled Alberta with the Trex Art Exhibition.
He humbly provided help to people in need; by contributing to local causes, lending an ear, or being a shoulder to cry on. You were sure to get Jim’s advice. Jim’s rehabilitation work saw him pick up countless people, dust them off and provide tools to put themselves back together. Jim’s love of bad jokes and making you think “I can’t believe you just said that” made every visit an adventure.
Jim is predeceased by his parents Courtney Carlson, Anna Margaret Wuest and stepmother Phyllis Carlson. He is survived by three sons, a daughter, 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, one brother, Brian and sisters Jane and Noreene. He leaves behind many friends who thought of him as family.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Badlands Art Gallery in Drumheller AB.

FLATERUD
Jane Ellen

June 6, 1946 - January 6, 2022

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jane Ellen Flaterud, 75, of Munson, AB on January 6, 2022, with family by her side.
She was born to the late Linton and Betty Cook on June 6, 1946 in Rosetown, SK. Jane graduated from Kyle High School and went on to the University of Saskatoon to pursue a career in teaching. Her career path took many turns over the years. She spent many years as an accountant and retired from her all-time favourite job at Western GM in Drumheller.
She married Glen Flaterud in 1967 and started their family soon after. They moved to Calgary in 1969 and started to build the dream. With hard work and sacrifice they bought a home, owned a business, travelled and retired to Munson in 1999. Jane and Glen were to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary in February. Jane is survived by her husband Glen and her three children, Sharon Soloway (Rod), Delee Helm and Curtis Flaterud. She is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, all of which meant the world to her. Jane was predeceased by her brothers John and Tom Cook in 2021.
Jane was a loving wife, mom, grandma, GG and friend. She loved quilting and spent hours teaching and sewing with her grandkids. She was an avid reader and always had a book or two on the go. Jane always made home feel like home to friends and family alike, whether you were sharing a meal, a caesar or a conversation.
Her legacy is one of love, courage, strength, tenacity and warmth. She was our soft place to land. All that have been touched by her will miss her greatly. Our family is so grateful to all of those that loved and supported Jane through this difficult time. Your phone calls, texts, pictures, letters and visits touched her deeply and she was amazed to learn how much she was loved. We are so thankful to have had the time to make sure she knew just how important she was to all of us.
Arrangements for a celebration of Jane’s life will be made at a later date.
