After having last week off the Drumheller Dragons played catch-up with three games over the course of the weekend, notching only one win which has caused the team to drop in the league standings.
Camrose opened the scoring only a minute and a half into the first shift, but the Dragons’ Justin Tateson quickly capitalized on a power play opportunity shortly after. Camrose responded with a minute left in the period, leading 2-1 into the second.
Dragon Matthew Brown notched the equalizer, and only point in the second period. Dragon Cole Cheveldave was deserving of the away star of the game, holding out 33 shots during the course of the game.
It wasn’t until four minutes left in the third that the Kodiaks took the lead. The Dragons could not rebound, before the clock ran out.
The Dragons were then host to the Sherwood Park Crusaders, taking a powerful win at their first home game in a week, 4-1.
Again, Cheveldave was awarded a star after shutting out 33 of the 34 shots on the Dragons net.
The Dragons took the lead near the end of the game and brought with it momentum that translated into a strong lead throughout.
Sherwood Park managed to sneak a shorthanded goal by with 30 seconds left, but the Dragons immediately responded 16 seconds later with another point.
It would be 3-2 until the Dragons scored on an empty net at the tail end of the third.
On Sunday afternoon, 637 attended the Dragons’ hosting of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
The Barons seem to be the team to beat this year, they are currently leading the standings and gave the Dragons a rough game.
Fort McMurray scored three goals, one on the PP and one short handed, before the end of the first period.
Goalie Cheveldave held strong throughout the second period, no scoring, until Fort McMurray’s fifth goal came in the third period and he was swapped for backup Garret Beckwith.
Drumheller will be on the road again this week, they picked up a game in Okotoks on Tuesday, results not available by presstime.
On Friday, the team will travel to Olds to face the Grizzlys who have taken the top spot in the south.
The Grizzlys will be following them back home for game a Saturday at the Memorial Arena.
