The Dragons trail the Calgary Royals by 11 points, but still have a chance at earning 14 points before the season is through. To make it, they have to be committed to playing near perfect hockey.
“The goal every day is to play a 60 minute game, and win it, and go on to the next one,” said coach Dan Price. “We can’t win seven in a row in one day, we have to do it one game at a time.”
The Dragons were in good form on Friday night, February 5, versus the Calgary Canucks. Mike Marianchuk opened the scoring six minutes in, assisted by Colin Bergman and Scott Kennedy. The Canucks however, tied the game before the first period was over. Kennedy earned his second of three points on the night with a powerplay, seven minutes into the second period. Robert Geddes followed his goal with, assist by Braden DeCock and Marcus Toye, as the Dragons took the lead for good. Sam Lawson capped the win with an empty net goal in the 4-2 win. Bergman had three assists and Andy Williams stood tall in net, stopping 42 of 44 shots.“Andy Williams has been a great part of our team all year, and he was great,” said coach Price. He adds the penalty kill and defense was strong, including being charged with a seven-minute powerplay in the third period.
“They had a lot of shots, but I don’t think they had too many good scoring chances, our penalty kill did a good job of filling in the shooting lanes. Periodically there were a few really good important saves.”
While the season is dwindling down, there were still a healthy 625 fans out for Friday’s game in Drumheller.
“Our guys really love playing at home, they love our fans and they love the Drumheller Memorial Arena, so they always get up for home games,” said Price. “It was great to see that fan base at our home games, and I hope to see more over our coming home games.”
“One thing for sure that will never change is they will compete very hard and will play right down to the wire.”
The Dragons were in Canmore to take on the Eagles on Monday night, February 7. This was a make up game for one cancelled on December 4. The Dragons lost in overtime 3-2, earning one point.
