The Drumheller Dragons have turned their game around, racking up three
wins this week, showing the offensive prowess crowds witnessed at the
beginning of the season.In a flurry of fresh players entering the Dragon’s den, the team has been revitalized and at the top of their game.
“There have been a lot of new faces in here the last few weeks,” coach Rob Hegberg said. “It has taken time to get our chemistry back.”
After losing 4-1 to the Brooks Bandits Tuesday, December 2, the Dragons quickly bounced back to beat the Calgary Royals at home and in Calgary.
The Royals, holding last place in the south, were outmatched and outplayed Thursday and Saturday, to a score of 7-1 and 9-3 respectively.
“The guys are buying in a little bit more, more focused now on keeping it basic and simple,” Hegberg said.
The Dragons bought in again Monday night taking down the Calgary Canucks 5-4 in an intense game that discounted three goals throughout the night. Two of Calgary’s and one of Drumhellers.
In the middle of the second, the Canucks scored twice, enough to tie up the score 4-4, but were discounted for one being offside and the net was out of place for the other.
Drumheller’s no-goal came after Robby Nocera was pushed into the Calgary net, without moving it.
Nocera hopped out of the net, still in place, and the Dragons scored with Nocera not even close to the crease.
The Dragons were hungry for the net, outshooting the Canucks by 10, clearly dominating the slot.
Hotshot Jeff Young scored two goals and one assist Monday, complimenting the strength of the team’s newly acquired players.
“We have a pretty young back end,” Hegberg says. “We now have guys who can really help.”
British Columbia Hockey League import John Bokla has already made a significant impact on the team, scoring four goals and two assists in only a six games this season with the Dragons.
“They now kind of have a different outlook on the game, looking at the big picture,” the coach said.
The Dragons hope to keep, if not exceed their current fourth place holding in AJHL’s south, playing at home twice this week.
Drumheller hosts the Camrose Kodiaks on Wednesday night, and the Spruce Grove Saints on Friday.
