After a slow Start the St. Anthony’s Sabres senior boys basketball team delivered a convincing blow to Trochu in league play.

The Sabres hosted the Trochu Valley School Blue Jays on Monday night. The Sabres started slow, with a lacklustre effort on defence.  They were able to regroup in the second quarter and began to play with confidence, and it came from effort on defence, and playing as a team on offense. The guards began to find the lanes to the basket opening up opportunities and improving their court vision.
Brandon Gruber led the team with 26 points and cleared the boards on both ends of the court. Alex Cliche also had 17 points.
Josh Mohan had a break out game. Dealing from both the point guard and shooting guard position, he tallied 10 points, but also came up with eight assists and eight steals in the 95-43 win. Grade 10 power forward Tanner Borowicz capped off the game with his first slam-dunk in a league game.
Coach Gavin Makse was impressed the team was able to regroup to come up with the win. All players scored in the winning effort. While there were many positive outcomes from the game, there were also some areas that need improvement. The Sabres’ foul shooting was marginally better than its last effort, and they struggled with breaking Trochu’s press early on. Coaches would also like to see players focus on making fundamentals habitual, which would eliminate costly turnovers.
The Sabres are finished league play for 2010, but next Wednesday will be playing in an alumni game. Former Sabres are invited back to take on the 2010-2011 edition. After Christmas break the Sabres will be back in action at their seventh annual Sabres Invitational on January 7-8.
