The Senior Drumheller Titans did not disappoint at their home-opener Saturday, taking down Canmore 37-5 in a surprising one-sided victory, says their head coach.
The Titans marked another win in this season in their triumph over Canmore, making their sites on provincials even closer in reach.
Drumheller was given grief in the first half, but coming out of the locker room in the second half the Titans moved the ball easily down the field.
“I think the outcome of the game had to do with how the defence did initially, setting the tone for the rest of the game,” Rasmussen said.
This win puts the team right where they want to be in the season, and although their loss to Olds a few weeks ago has left a bitter-taste in their mouths, the team is sitting in a good spot for play-offs.
Rasmussen said there is uncertainty on how teams will declare in tiering, with speculation that Olds will move up to tier three, leaving implications for the Titans.
If Olds moves up, the Titans will be left to face Canmore and Rundell College in Calgary for the tier four championship.
“It would be nice to not have to play Olds again, but that would be a cowardly approach for playoffs. It’d be nice to have another chance to play them to prove to them, and ourselves, that we’re a better team than who they played on September 18,” Rasmussen said.
“We know in the week after the loss to Olds, we improved significantly and Canmore bore the brunt of that improvement.”
This coming weekend will give the Titans a chance to recover bumps and bruises accumulated thus far, with a bye weekend where they will not have to play.
It will give Drumheller a chance to prepare for the High River Mustangs when they play on Drumheller’s field on Saturday, October 9.
The Titans have been studying the Mustangs’ game film, noticing their offence is heavily weighted on the passing game.
“Their quarterback has a phenomenal arm, he can put the ball on the wire and be very crisp and accurate with delivery,” Rasmussen said, “however, they had a lot of wrinkles to iron out... I think their linemen won’t be ready for the intensity of the blocking that our offence line will throw their d-line.”
The senior team will hit the field at 1:30 p.m. against the Mustangs, following the Bantam Titans’ game against the Springbank Phoenix at 11:00 a.m., October 9.
