There was gold rush at the Alberta 55-Plus Games for Drumheller athletes, after three competitors qualified for the Canada Senior Games next summer in Ontario.
Moffatt won gold in singles darts and Billie Wood also won gold in singles darts. Ian Daniels won silver in eight ball pool and Julie Lenfesty’s entry in the small Afghan quilt won her second gold medal in as many events. At the last games, she won a first place finish in crib and silver in arts and crafts.
While for Lenfesty, her entry does not go beyond the Alberta Games, the other three competitors all qualified for the national event.
Moffatt said the competition at the games was fierce. Wood had to play off for her first place finish in darts against a competitor from Lethbridge, and Moffatt said he was in tough with three other competitors who regularly play in money tournaments.
“I had to work at it, I was the only competitor to throw a 180,” he said.
Moffatt is planning to go to the National Games in Brockville, Ontario in 2010, and it will not be his first time. He won bronze in PEI in 2002, and brought home silver medals in the Men’s 70+ singles, and the Men’s 55+ doubles, and golds in the 55+ and 70 + Mixed doubles in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba in 2006.
Daniels says he is not sure if he will compete at the National games.
The Alberta 55-Plus Games are held biennially. Drumheller competitors represented Zone 2, which won 19 gold medals, 25 silver and 20 bronze medals. There were 16 evens including track and field, visual arts and crafts and creative writing.
