Women’s hockey is back in Drumheller after a number of years with the start up of a new adult rec league this month, and they’re looking for more players.

The league will start up on September 28 and about 11 ice times are primarily booked at both the Drumheller Memorial on Friday evenings with a couple games planned in Rockyford. So far, the rec league consists of four different teams with Delburne, Bowden, and Rockyford.

“We have enough, but barely enough. Being that we are mom’s who work and have other responsibilities, we could certainly use more players,” says organizer Angie Gill.

“We just look for people who can skate and have knowledge of the game. A lot of us never played organized hockey before, it’s just about having that drive to get exercise and have fun. It’s a lot of fun and it’s a great group.”

Being a rec league, it is no contact and mostly played for fun. The team does not have a name or logo yet – that will be decided once the team starts playing together.

It has been three years since Drumheller had a women’s rec hockey league, since the Drumheller Drumstix folded a few years ago because of dwindling interest and individuals moving on. Gill hopes this league is here to stay for coming seasons.

Anyone interested in joining the team is encouraged to visit the Drumheller Women’s Hockey Facebook page and leave a message there. If you don’t have Facebook you can email Angie at angiegil@telus.net. Fees are $100 for the full season to help cover ice times, and drop-in costs are $20 a game up to two games a season.
