Summer games roster chock full of local talent

There are more Drumheller athletes heading for the Alberta Summer Games and they will be representing the area in football, basketball and baseball.

Tracker Robinson, 14, of DVSS has been selected to play football on the Zone 2 squad. Tracker has been playing Titan Football since Grade 7.  Last year he was offensive player of the year for the Bantam Titans. At try outs for the Zone 2 Team he was a stand out and has been put on the offense and defensive.

“It is really exciting,” said Tracker pointing out he may be the first athlete from East Coulee to participate in the games.

Sam Brown has also been selected to play at the games, this time for basketball. Sam has been a standout on the Junior Dynos and was selected to play for Zone 2. Ron Davies of Hanna coaches this team and Ryan Hatch of DVSS is assisting coaching.

Sam says they have a well-balanced team, and have been getting ready with practices and playing in tournaments and exhibition games. Recently they beat the Red Deer Zone team 88-30.

Cody Thompson of DVSS is also going to the games, and he will be joined by six other members of his baseball team.

“It’s pretty cool I made the team, it will be a higher caliber of baseball than I usually play,” said Cody.

Cody plays for the Acme Red Sox, as there is no baseball in the valley and is a third baseman. He is not alone. Carson Boyd and Dave Steen of Carbon and Austin Kopjar of Rumsey made the squad. Also on the Zone 2 team from the Red Sox are Brett Stockwood of Three Hills, Riley Smith and Bennett Kary of Trochu.

The 2012 Alberta Summer games are in Lethbridge from July 26-29. Sports include athletics, baseball, basketball, canoe/kayak, cycling – BMX, cycling - mountain biking, football, inline hockey, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, triathlon, and beach volleyball.
