Lacrosse looks to expand to junior level

The introduction of lacrosse  to the area has been a success. The next logical step is for it to progress to the junior level.
Badlands Lacrosse is branching out hoping to fill out a roster to play at the junior level, Dave Powell who is hoping to coach such a squad says the interest has been growing to the point of setting up a team.

“This spring we have guys coming out of the woodwork wanting to play,” said Powell. “It is definitely a natural progression.”
He explains the junior level is separate from the minor levels. It offers the opportunity for players from 16 -21 to play. They are setting up a meeting this week in hopes of fielding a team.
Last season Powell helped to coach a junior team playing out of Olds. There were a few Drumheller players who came out to play on the team and enjoyed it.
He says judging by the talent level they could put together a successful team.
“From the level I saw last year coaching I think we could field a very competitive team,” said Powell.
He said it is an exciting level of play.
“It is a totally different level of sport,” said Powell. “It’s faster, it’s tougher…it is phenomenal.”
While it is too late this season to join a junior league, he says the have been looking at setting up exhibition games and are ready to enter a tournament if they have a team.
There is a meeting on Tuesday, March 8 at 6 p.m. at the Sports Room Source for Sports. Those interested in playing are encouraged to come out.
