Gloria Swainston

September 13, 2019

Gloria Herzog (nee Trout) passed away peacefully in Calgary with her children by her side at the age of 85 on September 13, 2019.
Gloria was the 4th of 15 children born to Frank and Erma Trout, growing up on the family farm south of Big Valley and adjacent to the Imperial Ranch.
Gloria completed her schooling in Delia and then progressed to the Teachers Training program in Calgary, following which she taught Grades 1 through 9 at Surprise School. The Handhills Stampede provided the occasion to meet Bob Herzog; the beginning of a lifelong loving partnership.
Gloria lived a good long full life. One of her many gifts was creating beauty with her hands be it needlework, baking, or flower gardens. She applied perfection to all things she touched. She had a passion for Mother Nature’s beauty and often wanted nothing more than to be with the grassy hills, the big sky and sunsets, the birds and their songs. Her greatest happiness was to be with Bob, and surrounded by family.
Gloria was a dedicated partner in marriage, in her family and the farm. She was central to countless family social events and was the creator of so many happy memories for others. She delighted in caring for and spending time with all of her grandchildren, taking great pride in their accomplishments. She loved to collect and share photographs and document details big and small about her family and community. She took pride in everything she did, and was especially dedicated to keeping the farm books in perfect order until shortly before leaving Delia. Gloria was a born communicator and connector, and loved nothing more than to visit and meet with family and friends over coffee or over the phone. Her community involvements included 4H Sewing club, Delia Fall Fair and Communities in Bloom.
Following a move from the farm to their new home in Delia, Gloria and Bob enjoyed all the neighbors, merchants and social activities in town. As time went by and life grew quieter; crosswords, family photos and music became her constant companions. In 2014 Gloria and Bob left Delia for Airdrie and in 2016 made their final move to Providence Care Centre in Calgary.
Gloria will be deeply missed by her children Janet, Susan (Ralph), Mitchell (Karen) and Jennifer (Tom) as well as grandchildren Marc (Catherine), Paul (Antonia), Justin (Kayla), Warren, Grant (Maria), Jeffrey (Jordan), Kaylin and Ashlyn (Quinten), and great grandchildren, Natalie, Andrew, Benjamin and Alisia.
Also left behind are sisters Audrey Kingcott, Rosemarie (Tiny) Niemetz, Faith Crowle, Betty Ridley (Robert) and Marilyn Muhlbeirer (Robert) plus sisters-in-law Connie, Barb and Glenda Trout; Shirley, Arlene, Eva, and Joan Herzog as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gloria was predeceased by Bob, her beloved husband of 63 years in 2017 and grandson Jordan Larkam in 2009. Also predeceased by her parents and siblings Art, Gwen, Austen, Glen, David, Lyman, Daryl, Carolyn and Tim.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Providence Care Centre, Calgary for their constant, compassionate and
respectful care for Gloria in her final years.
A funeral service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, September 28 at the Delia Community Hall, Delia, Alberta. Interment to follow at the Delia Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Providence Care Centre, 149-Providence Blvd SE, Calgary, AB T2X 0X2
