Drumheller inmate dies of suspected drug overdose

    A Drumheller Institution inmate died of a suspected drug overdose Sunday after being found unresponsive in his cell, the second inmate to die in custody at the institution since late September.     Justin Woods, 35, was found shortly after midnight on October 31, in an unconscious state and having difficulty breathing.
    During cell checks, the window to Woods’ cell door was covered. Woods did not respond to verbal directions to uncover the window, and his cell was entered.
    After being found unconscious, Woods, who was serving a sentence of 6 years, 5 months for robbery, trafficking, as well as break and enter, was transported to Drumheller Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
    Woods was housed in a single occupant cell, and is suspected to have overdosed on a self-administered drug. Foul play is not suspected.
    As in all cases where an individual dies in custody, police and corners were called to investigate and Correctional Service of Canada will review circumstances surrounding the incident.
    This is the second incident since September 21 where an inmate has died in custody at the Drumheller penitentiary. Inmate Billy-Joe Crow Show, 32, died that date, after being found unresponsive in his cell.
