A youth who took responsibility for a fire at Extra Foods, that damaged the store, has been sentenced to a 15-month probation order.
Around 5 p.m. on June 24, the young person was at Extra Foods in Drumheller with two other young people when in what was described in court as an impulsive act, he stole a lighter and lit a rack of clothing on fire. Damages to the store were said to be in the range of $74,000.
The court heard that the incident, described as a prank which got out of control, was out of character for the youth.
The young person was brought by his father to the Drumheller RCMP detachment the next day, and took responsibility.
Judge McIlhargey sentenced the young person to 15 months probation. He is to complete 40 hours of community service, which must be completed one month prior to the completion of his probation.
He is also to abide by a curfew and cannot be in possession of any materials that could be used to start a fire.
