Drumheller man sentenced following chase in stolen vehicle

    A young Drumheller man has been sentenced to six months in jail after leading police in a pursuit in a stolen vehicle.     Cameron Weatherly appeared in provincial court in Drumheller, and faced a number of charges stemming from an incident on Saturday, October 2. He pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood, operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer, theft of a motor vehicle under $5,000 and two breaches of probation.
    On October 2 in the early hours of the morning, the owner of Dodge Ram witnessed his truck being stolen. Police located the vehicle and activated the cruiser’s emergency equipment. Initially the driver slowed down, but then accelerated. Police pursued for a short time, but the driver evaded the RCMP.
    The truck was again observed. RCMP activated its emergent equipment, and the driver eventually stopped.
    The driver showed signs of impairment. RCMP took breath samples that showed 120 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The incident occurred between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., thereby breaching Weatherly’s probation order that stipulated a curfew.
    He also pleaded guilty to a previous breach of his probation, by not adhering to a curfew. He has been incarcerated since that day.
    Judge P.M. McIlhargey sentenced Weatherly to six months in jail. He was given credit for 21 days presentence custody, leaving 5 months and nine days to be served.
