Local girls donate angel hair

hair-girls.jpghair-girls-after.jpgIt took about four generous snips, and two local girls changed their look, and possibly the look of young cancer patients they have never seen or met.
Averie, 6, daughter of Sandra Graham and Mark Meuchel, and Mackenna, 6, daughter of Sharon and Kurt Walker had hair most women of any age would die for. When they decided to lose the locks, a suggestion was made to perhaps give their hair to those who need it most, and they went for it.

Those in need would be financially disadvantaged children who have lost their hair due to a medical condition or treatment.
The organization to do that is Angel Hair for Kids.  A program of A Child’s Voice Foundation, the charity in its first three years, has provided wig systems at no charge to more than 150 children.
On Thursday, November 13, the two bravely sat up in the chair at Bold Efexx Hair Shop. Kim Moffat chopped more than 10 inches of hair  from Averie’s head, while Cindy Poland made short work of just as much hair off the top of Mackenna’s head.
Mackenna said she was nervous leading up to the big day, but was happy when it was all over.
Averie said she was happy to see her hair gone, as it wouldn’t hurt so much now when her mother combs it.
Of course the staff at Bold Efexx made sure the couple  had stylish new dos before they left.
The girls’ ponytails will now be sent to the Angel Hair for Kids program that operates out of Ontario.  According to a release, it takes about 10-12 donated ponytails to complete one wig or hair prosthesis, and costs about $800 to make. The program is unlike any other in Canada, as each recipient is given a personal appointment in a salon that specializes in wigs and hair loss. This one-on-one treatment, donated by the hair professionals makes sure the wig or prosthesis is custom fitted and styled, to make the hair each child’s very own.
