Carbon residents will have two choices to make come October 14; to choose a Member of Parliament, and a new town councillor.
A vacated seat on Carbon Village Council will be filled on the same day as the federal election. Shaun Henry, who has moved out of the village, vacated the seat. So far two candidates have lined up to be counted. They are (alphabetically) Heather Boyd and Brian McHugh.

Boyd has been in the area for about five years and works as a
massage therapist at Diosa Spa. She is also a mother of three. This is
the first time she has run in an election.
She explains others approached her at the time of the last general municipal election in the village to run. At that time she declined. She is hoping for a seat at the table at this by-election.
“Carbon needs to grow, and I want to see that happen,” said Boyd, who adds she wants to be a spokesperson for young families.
She has volunteered for a number of community groups including the Parent’s Advisory Council, Carbon Connectors and the recreation board. She has also volunteered for the Lions Club.
“I am willing to learn and willing to do my best,” she said.
McHugh also says he was approached by another person to run. Hailing from Ontario, he has resided in the village for about three years, and operates the Carbon Bottle Depot.
“I guess they want some fresh ideas to make the village grow and prosper,” said McHugh. “ I think I can contribute to that greatly.”
While he hasn’t been politically involved before, he has been involved in the community.
“Enough of me voicing my opinion, I thought ‘hey, why not run for council?’” he said. “Maybe by having my foot in the door, maybe I could get a few more things done.”
“It’s going to be a giant learning curve, seeing what I can and can’t do. I would like to go in guns blazing, but with all realism slow and steady should win the race.”
