Car thief sentenced

20180117 RCMP Stock TJH 0141

A woman was given a 6-month conditional sentence order after pleading guilty to theft of a motorvehicle, flight from police, and possession of stolen property.
Mackenzie Hardy, 20, appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, May 14 to enter her guilty pleas.
The court heard how on June 13, 2020, she was at the home of a man in Drumheller when she took his vehicle.
Several hours later, in Hanna, police saw the stolen vehicle and attempted to bring it to a stop. The vehicle headed west on Highway 9. Police did not pursue but informed the Drumheller detachment of the vehicle.
Later Drumheller RCMP attempted to stop the vehicle but was not successful. A pursuit was not authorized.
Hardy had no prior record, and the crown conceded had it gone to trial, there could have been trialable issues.
Judge Gashler accepted a joint submission from the crown and defence of a conditional sentence order where Hardy would be under house arrest for the first four months of the sentence and then to abide by a curfew.
