Drumheller Fire Chief Bruce Wade is asking members of the community to be careful around water bodies as the ice begins to melt.
With warmer weather, ice has become more unstable. He said over the weekend, a member of the fire department observed young people on the Red Deer River. He tried to warn them, but the warning went unheeded.
Not only is the ice unstable, but it can become more treacherous as the ice begins to break up and water begins to flow. The level of the river can rise and fall dramatically, and the banks can be very unstable.
He adds to also be cognizant of pets and keep them on a leash when walking near a waterway, so they are not tempted to venture out on the ice.
