As the school year is coming to an end, it will soon be time for students to begin thinking of employment for the summer.
Talking to Marina Paarup, the director of MH Enterprises, and Jennifer McHugh, Working Supervisor and Career and Employment Consultant at Alberta Works, here are a some suggestions for landing summer job:
“I think their first step is taking a look at building a resume,” said Paarup.
She said even if students haven’t had any prior experience with the work force, it doesn’t mean they don’t have valuable skills.
“It’s figuring out what skills you have and where you would like to go with them,” said Paarup.
Jennifer McHugh said don’t discount jobs such as babysitting, or even mowing your neighbour’s lawn. She said it all counts as experience.
Taking a look at your network of who you know is a good idea.
“It’s sort of tapping into that hidden job market,” said Paarup.
“It’s very important to be flexible and open as to what type of job you want, because the more eager and willing you are, the better chances you will have,” said McHugh.
McHugh also suggested wearing a nice outfit while either dropping off a resume or going for an interview is always a good idea. She said following up after applying or going for an interview is smart too, because it will give employer’s a chance to put a face to the resume or interview.
Both MH enterprises and Alberta Works have resources such as job boards that are available for students to take a look at, and anyone looking for help finding employmet is encouraged to visit.
“Right now I’m seeing a huge demand for students, so they kind of have the pick of their choice,” said Paarup.
Paarup said that looking and applying for summer work as early as possible is a good way to get your foot in the door.
“Sometimes it’s that summer job that can lead them down a career path, and gaining paid employment experience is going to help them with the next phase of their lives,” said Paarup.
