Kick off the season at Summer Daze in Hussar

hussar.jpgOne of the best ways to start your summer days is at the Hussar Lions Summer Daze on June 18 and 19. This is the 29th year for the Hussar Summer Daze. Thirty of the top bull riders in Canada will be competing on Sunday at the rodeo grounds. If you are just going for the bulls, then you are missing most of the fun.

The community of Hussar comes alive at Summer Daze. To get there from Drumheller take Highway 10 East passed Rosedale to Highway 56. Go 50 kilometres South to the Village of Hussar. The best way to get a good start to the day is to get up bright and early and enjoy a chuckwagon breakfast at the Hussar arena from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. After that, the festivities begin with a parade at 10 a.m. The beer gardens open at 11 a.m. and there is a full slate of events for everybody. There will be gymkhana events, sheep riding, local ranch branding and open cattle penning. Something else not to miss is the ever popular Farmyard Wars. This is the third year for the event and it is definitely a crowd favourite. Fashioned roughly on Junkyard Wars, the competitors have to register a week before and are given a task (last year it was to see who could penetrate a round bale with a fence post). At 1 p.m. the farmyard mechanics go head to head with their creations.

To get away from the action, spectators can head to the arena where there will be a community garage sale on Friday and Saturday. Ball fans can take in a little slo-pitch at the annual mixed tournament which runs Saturday and Sunday. There is enough for anyone to work up an appetite, and the organizers have just the cure. The community hall will host a barbeque from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Attendees have a choice on their night time entertainment. The Hussar Sun Downers will be hosting Bingo at the Sun Downers hall from 7:30 p.m to 10 p.m. There will also be dance at the Community Hall starting at 9 p.m. Picture ID is required. Another chuckwagon breakfast is what you’ll need to get started for Sundays Supreme Series Bull Riding Competition. The best of the best will be competing on the best stock that can be offered. This is Professional Canadian Bullriding sanctioned event, complete with a bull fighting competition. There is not a bad seat in the house for the action which kicks off at 2 p.m.
