The Seventh Son wraps Drumheller shoot

That’s a wrap.

The Seventh Son, a new motion picture being released by Legendary Pictures (Batman Begins, The Hangover, Inception), began filming here in Drumheller earlier this week.

The crew is expected to be finished in Drumheller today.

The Seventh Son is based on The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney. The story follows Tom Ward, the seventh son of a seventh son, as he is trained by the Spook/Master Gregory to fight the forces being unleashed by the evil Mother Malkin.

Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) plays Tom Ward, Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski, Tron, True Grit) plays Gregory, and Julianne Moore (Crazy Stupid Love, Children of Men) is the malevolent witch Mother Malkin. Kit Harrington (HBO’s Game of Thrones) stars in the movie as well.

The movie was filmed exclusively in western Canada. Two weeks ago Mayor Terry Yemen and the Town’s Economic Development Officer met with the production team and showed them around Horsethief Canyon.

Drumheller was chosen as the setting for the opening sequence of the movie, showing the passage of time after a young Gregory imprisons Mother Malkin.

Most of the shooting in Drumheller involved filming scenes with a young Gregory and a time lapse sequence of the scenery.

Bridges did appear briefly on set on Tuesday. He arrived by helicopter during the day and stayed roughly two hours to coach the actor playing the young Gregory. Afterwards, he left via helicopter.

A crew of roughly 80 stayed in Town for the shoot. No locals were involved, save for Gangster Enterprises who provided traffic control.

To get to the locations where they were filming, crews did create a small track for off road vehicles. After shooting is finished, they will return the site to it’s natural beauty.

The movie is expected to come out in the fall of 2013.
