Dragons fall to Steel Friday, two weekend games cancelled

The Dragons had most of the weekend off after two of their three weekend matches were cancelled after snow crippled movement on the highways.

But the Dragons faced a 6-5 loss to the St. Albert Steel at home on Friday, after pushing back with three goals late in the third, being down 5-2 heading into the third period.
“We really felt like we were going to get it,” says head coach Dan Price. “I was very proud of the guys, they just kept pouring it on.”
“We felt like we played very well, it was just a couple of errors here and there,” says head coach Dan Price. “The one thing about St. Albert is they’re a very opportunistic team.”
“If that will drive home that the mistakes we make can cost us the game, then it was worth it.”
In the first period, St. Albert opened the scoring at the 6:26 mark with a powerplay goal, with a response from Dragon Mike Marianchuk on their very own PP chance at 14:06.
The second period brought a flurry of goals from the Steel, scoring four within the first three quarters of the second stanza. Dragon Kenton Levesque managed to make it 5-2 at the end of the period on a powerplay goal with under two minutes left.
The Steel found their third powerplay goal just 25 seconds into the third. It looked as if the Dragons would pull off another Christmas miracle, as they managed to make it 6-5 with three goals within the first half of the third. They failed to find the back of the net in the remaining 10 minutes, keeping the score to 6-5.
The Dragons hosted the Camrose Kodiaks on Tuesday evening, and results were not yet available by press time.
“The last time we played them, it was a very physical game,” says Price. “We’re going to try to assert ourselves physically, and they will too.”
Drumheller will be on the road this weekend, travelling to Brooks this Friday and Canmore on Saturday. The team’s next home game is January 20 when they’ll face the Calgary Canucks at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Arena.
The AJHL’s trade deadline was Tuesday, look in Friday’s inSide for results as the team firms up their roster.
