BMO Financial Group announced The Acme Dragons, a U-10 boys and girls soccer team from Acme, as the Team of the Week winners.
“We were pleasantly surprised they picked us” said Tara Sawyer, coach of The Acme Dragons.
The Acme Dragons are the fifth out of 15 teams to be selected weekly across Canada. Winners are chosen based on team pride and spirit, community involvement and passion for the game. Each winning team will vie for the title of 2012 BMO Team of the Week.
The winner will be selected by the Canadian public, and voting will begin on August 13.
“I believe we epitimize grassroots soccer, and for BMO to choose us it is excellent,” said Sawyer.
The Team of the Week contest is a celebration of sport at the grassroots level. It was developed to inspire communities by recognizing youth soccer passion.
The Acme Dragons are very active in the community. They routinely collect for the food bank, and do bottle drives throughout the year.
For being one of 15 teams chosen in BMO’s “Team of the Week,” the team received new track suits, and were given $500 to donate to the Canadian charity of their choice. They decided to donate it to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation as it directly helps children across the province.
The grand prize for the winning team includes a $125,000 towards refurbishing the community soccer field, a trip for the team to either a Canadian Major League Soccer game or a Canadian National team home match, and $5,000 donation to the team’s charity of choice.
“I hope all of Alberta gets behind us when it comes time to vote,” said Sawyer.
