DAVIES Leonard

DAVIES, Leonard
April 4, 1929 - December 24, 2013

George Leonard Davies was born in Trochu, AB. on April 4, 1929 to Arthur and Elma Davies of Ghost Pine Creek. He was the youngest of six children. Growing up he attended the Three Hills School for grades one and two, then he attended the Manor School in Ghost Pine for grades three through nine and then back to Three Hills School for his last three years. At a young age, he started working for local farmers. In 1949 he started seismic work with Wilfred (Porky) Schmidt of Able Drilling where he remained for ten years. He then worked for A and S Drilling for eight years. In 1965 he purchased land in the Ghost Pine area and farmed until retiring in 1989. During that time he continued heading north in the winters working as a driller and tool push with Bertram Drilling. Leonard married Alice Barber of Carbon, AB. on October 30, 1976. With this union came the addition of a wonderful family - Alice’s three daughters and one son and their spouses and nine grandchildren all under the age of seven! Quite a change from a bachelor’s life!! Leonard lived in Carbon, AB. until his health declined in November 2009 at which time he moved to the Hillview Lodge in Drumheller AB. where he resided until his passing December 24, 2013 at the age of 84 years. Leonard is survived by his sisters Evelyn King and Elma Wilson and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Marion Davies, Ian and Gerda Sallows and Garnet and Maureen Sallows; step children Jacquie (Alvin) McLean, Gary (Grace) Barber, Nancy Fediuk, Brian Sowerby; nieces Cheryl (Brian) Myers, Gayle (Doug) Parker, Meryle (Brian) Kester; nephews Harold (Jan) King, Murray Wilson; step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Leonard was predeceased by an infant son Richard, his parents Art and Elma Davies, his loving wife Alice Davies, sister Mabelle Davies; brothers Donald Davies and Kenneth Davies; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Ruth Noble, Isobel and Jack Kundert, Irene and Alberta Smeal, Bill and Marj Sallows, Tom Wilson, Norman King and Connie Davies; step daughter Wendy Sowerby; step grandsons Stephen Fediuk and Ryan Sowerby and step son-in-law Walter Fediuk. Leonard will be remembered as a quiet, soft spoken, mild-mannered, kind and generous man. He was known for his witty, dry sense of humour that always got a laugh from everyone. He had a knack of drawing people to him in a way that no one else could. As a family, we wish to express our appreciation to the Hillview Lodge staff, Dr. Graham and the Drumheller Laboratory staff for their excellent care and kindness shown to Leonard over the last few years. We also appreciate the professional care of the ambulance staff and the Drumheller hospital staff and the guidance received from Kneehill Funeral Services. A celebration of Leonard’s life will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at the Carbon Community Centre. Those wishing may send memorial tributes to the Arthritis Society, The Salvation Army or a charity of choice. Arrangements in care of Ed Stephan of Kneehill Funeral Services Ltd., Three Hills, AB.
