SHAPKA Marjorie Lemay

SHAPKA, Marjorie Lemay
1923 - 2013

Marjorie Lemay (Marj) Shapka passed away peacefully in her sleep at the tender age of 90 years. Predeceased by her husband Nick in March, 2012, Marj spent her final months in continuing care, battling acute onset dementia. It was that fight to which she finally succumbed on Sunday with family by her side. Marj wore many hats throughout her long and fruitful life and she was a woman of countless skills. In her (limited) spare time, Marj loved to knit and sew. She was constantly working on some new pattern - be it socks for one of her sons, baby clothes for a new arrival, a shirt or a sweater for one of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family dinners on the Shapka farm were legend and usually meant a bounty of fresh produce from Marj’s garden. More importantly that also meant fresh dessert, uncompromisingly made from scratch. Oatmeal & raisin cookies, moko cake, angel food cake - there was always something for everyone’s palate. Being the wife of a farmer, Marj’s job was never easy. She raised three sons and ran a tight household, sometimes single-handedly while her husband worked the fields and managed his many other responsibilities. But she was never one to complain – Marj loved Nick passionately and she was immensely proud of her life, her boys and the families they went on to make for themselves. Marj will be greatly missed.  She is survived by her three sons Bob (Patty), Bruce (Lynda), and Bill; her grandchildren Carly Mueller (Ron), Chris, David, Paul, Tim, Lyndsey Gell (Ryan), Mark, Tessa (Jack MacIsaac) and Jacob; as well as her many great grandchildren, Zachary, Alexander, Marshall, Cole, Colleen and Landon.  Marj is predeceased by brothers Jack and Robert Taylor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made in Marj’s name to a charity of your choice. Respecting Marjorie’s wishes, a small and informal Graveside Service will be held at the Drumheller Cemetery on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.  Please contact the family if you would like more information. Thank you to the staff at the Sundance Unit of the Beverly Care Centre Midnapore in Calgary and to Dr. Dan Botha for their care and compassion.
