- January 17, 2012

It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Joyce Viola (Polly) Simpson, on January 17, 2012, at the age of 90 years. Polly was born in New Westminster, B.C., on September 10, 1921, the first of three children for her parents, Victor and Myrtle Sortwell. In her youth, she was trained and excelled in both dance and swimming. After completing high school, Polly graduated from business education, and accepted a position in a busy office in New Westminster. It was at the coast that she met and married a young flight officer, Jim Simpson, who was stationed there at that time during World War II. Following the war, they moved to Delia area, and then to the Simpson family farm. Together they built a life, which benefited from Polly’s business experience. Jim and Polly raised four children on the family farm, and enjoyed the friendship of the many young families throughout the area. They were life time members of the Delia Legion Branch, and were avid bridge players in the community. Later in life, they moved to Drumheller where they continued to entertain and enjoy both family and friends. Polly was predeceased by; her beloved husband Jim, her parents, Victor and Myrtle Sortwell, her sister Inez Hewitt and her dear friend Ruth Thompson. She leaves to mourn her; brother Greg Sortwell, her four children: Janie (Jerry) Rosgen, Inez Dahl, John (Lorna) Simpson and Jim (Angela) Simpson, ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews, who remember their Aunt Pol fondly. Polly will always be remembered for the love of family, her kindness and generosity, her sense of humour, and her strength of character. The family would like to thank Dr. Graham for his kind and compassionate care. A special thank you is also extended to the staff of the Sunshine Lodge and to the staff of the Drumheller Continuing Care Centre. A Memorial Service will be held for Polly at 2:00 pm, on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Saint Patrick’s Anglican Church in Delia, Alberta, with Rev. Brian Stiles officiating. Following the service there will be lunch in the Delia Community Hall. There will be a private family graveside service prior to the Memorial Service. If friends and family so desire, donations can be made to the Delia Historical Society, for the restoration fund of St. Patrick’s Anglican Church.
