BAIRD, Dorothy (Nee Halase)

BAIRD, Dorothy (Nee Halase)
April 25, 1926 - April 17, 2012

DOROTHY BAIRD (Nee Halase) April 25, 1926 to April 17, 2012, went to be with her Lord and Saviour.  My loving and loyal wife of 63 years will be forever remembered and cherished. Pre-deceased by her parents Julius and Catherine (Katie) Halase; infant son Allister; her brothers Arthur and Julius (Patrick). She is survived and will be remembered by her loving husband Stanley C. Baird, a niece, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and the extended BAIRD clan family (Vancouver-Princeton).Dorothy was born in Drumheller and attended school here and in Morrin, while living on the family farm.  Upon graduation of high school and Garbutts Business College in Calgary in 1943, she was employed with the military.  Stationed at Mewatta/Currie Barracks, she met, fell in love and married a young medical paratrooper (with a Harley motorcycle) on June 11, 1948.  After a wonderful honeymoon in Banff, her and Stan experienced many challenges of military life; joys of pomp and glory; and loneliness of lengthy separations.  Dorothy was patriotic and accepted the togetherness of serving our great nation of Canada to help maintain peace and freedom.  Upon retirement from the military, Stan and Dorothy returned home to Drumheller. Dorothy was an active member of the Grace Lutheran Church and Beta Sigma Phi.  She also had a flare for volunteering at the local Nursing Home and Pioneer Centre.  She enjoyed travelling with Stan when he attended medical conferences with the Correctional Services of Canada.  Dottie possessed a talent of hosting/entertaining friends and relatives and was known for her famous cabbage rolls.  She kept an immaculate home and grounds until years of declining health prevented her from these daily activities. Effects of a horrifying car accident in 1960 became evident affecting her health and limiting her ability to continue with daily lifestyle activities.  However, she enjoyed her home and with help of loyal friends who came to keep Dorothy’s hair groomed (Carole and Beverley), the home neat and clean (Bonnie) and the yard maintained (Bob). We will be forever grateful for the medical services of Dr. Elizabeth Racz; the home care nurses; the acute and continuing care nurses; and hospital staff.  We would also like to thank Dr. Lawrence Olfert, Reverend Curtis Boehm and Reverend Lloyd Huber who attended Dorothy in her final hours.  A thank you as well, to Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Home for final arrangements.  Our family and myself cannot ever thank all of you (family and friends) enough for your support as it is beyond what words could ever convey. Celebration of Life and memorial services will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church, followed by interment at Drumheller Cemetery and fellowship gathering at Grace Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by Drumheller Continuing Care.
