HOLM, Helen Crawford (nee Hood)
October 9, 1919 - May 30, 2011

Helen was born and raised in Calgary, attended King Edward High School and then went on to train as a registered nurse at the Calgary General Hospital - graduating in 1942.  Helen met Eric at the Ogden Munitions Depot in Calgary and they were married on March 26, 1945. In 1948 Helen and Eric moved to Drumheller, and for the next 63 years, Drumheller was home.  Those years flew by as Helen belonged to a ‘sewing circle’; curled in the winter; golfed in the summer; enjoyed summer holidays at Shuswap Lake; was secretary of the Drumheller and District Music Festival; and returned to nursing on the night shift at the T.R. Ross Nursing Home.  She then began a job that she loved and looked forward to every day  – clinic nurse at the Drumheller Associated Physicians Clinic.  She worked at the clinic for 17 years, retiring at age 65.  Retirement was not a time to slow down, but rather to do new things.  Helen delivered Meals on Wheels; helped with the costumes for Drumheller’s Passion Play; was a member of the Drumheller Hospital Board; and enjoyed numerous trips with Eric. Helen was always one to look for the humor in any situation.  She was happiest when looking forward to a special occasion with friends or the next time her kids, grand kids or great grandchildren would be visiting.   Moving to the Sunshine Lodge in 2010, saw her join many old friends and make many new friends.  Helen told everyone how much she enjoyed living at Sunshine Lodge. Helen is survived by her 3 children: Gordon (Leslie) Olds Alberta, Stuart (Mary) Richmond B.C, and Barb (Barry Martini) St. Paul Alberta; six grand children and 3 great grand children; and by her brother Dick Hood (Thora) Campbell River B.C.  She was predeceased by Eric, her husband of 60 years; her parents Minnie and Robert Hood; her brother Robert Hood (Mary); and her sister Frances (Leo Gommerud). Helen will be sadly missed and always remembered by those who knew her. If you wish, donations may be made to the following in memory of Helen Holm: Calgary General Hospital Alumnae Association Bursary Fund or Drumheller Sunshine Lodge Recreation/ Activity Fund. A Celebration of Life was held, June 2, 2011 from the Knox United Church in Drumheller, Alberta.  Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.  www.courtneywintersfuneralhome.ca.
