1917-2010

Winnifred Sarah Hunter passed away in Drumheller,  Alberta on the 5th May 2010 at the age of 93.  She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Winnie married George Bryson Hunter and together reared a family of nine children in Drumheller.  She was well known for her quick wit, bluenose expressions, sense of humour, spirited manner and capacity to enjoy life. She was born in Drumheller on 28th March 1917 of the late William Everett and Winnifred Rachel Clarke.  She was educated in the Nose Hills area, Midlandvale and Drumheller.  She obtained a diploma in beauty  culture and practiced in  Drumheller in her younger years and taught kindergarten in her later years.  Winnie was a member of the Knox United Church and Unit 8 UCW and a member of the lively volunteer hairdressers who served the Sunshine Lodge and Auxillary Hospital for 24 years.  She served as matron for the RCMP and also was a chaperone at the Composite High School dormitory. Winnie was predeceased by her husband George Bryson in 1992; daughter Darlene N.; sons Alexander G. “Alex” (Ruth) and Thomas G .  She is survived by her children:  Margaret W. “Maggie”(Albert) Barrie of Drumheller; William R. “Bill” (Lorraine) of Calgary; Grace M. Hanson of Brooks; Jeanne E. Safronovich (Steve) of Brooks, Carol  B. Hunter of Calgary; James D. “Jim”(Sharron) of Port Moody B.C. and daughter in law Ruth (Alex) of Calgary. Winnie was the last surviving member of the original Clarke family.  She was predeceased by her sisters Mary McIntyre (Ian) of Drumheller and Gladys Guse (Dave) of Coronation;  and brothers Don (Anne Gammie) of Drumheller and Howard (Doris) of Red Deer and Lloyd (Elaine) of Calgary.  She was predeceased by sisters in law Millie Mitchell of Calgary and Lucy Clarke of Stettler and survived by sisters in law Pat (Effie) Vansen of Drumheller , Florence Hunter of Edmonton and Doris Clarke of U.S.A. Left to carry on Winnie’s legacy are 26 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. Services to be held at Knox United Church in Drumheller at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, 12 May 2010.
