With much sadness, we announce that our dear Dad and loving Opa passed away peacefully on an early spring day in April with his children by his side. His 97 years on this earth were filled with the love of his family and the company of many good friends along the way. Karl was born an only child and spent his formative years under the good care of his paternal grandmother in Austria. He immigrated to Canada at the tender age of 16 to help with the family farm in southern Alberta, working alongside his parents with all that farm life entails. Karl was a proud Canadian and answered his country’s call into the Canadian Armed Forces as a young man who knew very little English, but with his jovial demeanour and his infectious outgoing personality, he quickly made friends while stationed at Currie Barracks in Calgary. After the war he returned to the family farm and having worked diligently to save enough money, he was eventually able to purchase land and a homestead of his own in the same rural area. He returned to Austria for a visit in 1949 where he met Josephine Marie Graf. The two were married the following year in Delia, Alberta and started a family while running their successful mixed farming operation which continued on for 50 years, most certainly due to Karl’s love of the land. Being an only child, Karl wanted nothing more than to have a large family. His children and subsequent grandchildren brought him an immense amount of joy and he cherished the large family gatherings where all five children and their families could be together at the farm. Family meant everything to him. Karl was a willing and eager conversationalist – no topic was off limits and he would and could talk to anyone about anything. His children fondly remember having rousing conversations and family debates while helping with the many farm chores. In his later years while working briefly at the Royal Tyrrell Museum as a Commissionaire he was able to further exercise his customer service skills. He delighted in meeting new people from all over the world. Karl was active in his community, serving the church in The Knights of Columbus for 50 years and helping neighbours in the wider community when needed from barn raising’s to fixing telephone lines. Karl and his wife Josephine Marie had many friends whose company was heartily enjoyed with good food and good times. Karl was also very musical and played both the guitar and the accordion by ear. His children and grandchildren had the privilege of listening to their Opa play his accordion for them while they danced around the room on many occasions. Such special memories for all of us. Karl’s love of music continues to live on in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Karl Bund is predeceased by his wife, Josephine Marie Bund and survived by his greatest joys, his children Anne (Don), Heidi (Michael), Mona, Rose (Bill) and Tony (Theresa), his grandchildren Brendan, Hayley (Justin), Dylan, and Logan, and by his wee great-granddaughter Josephine. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for the Funeral Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (151 3rd St. West, Drumheller, AB) on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. A family burial will follow at the Delia Cemetery. A light lunch will be served afterwards in the Delia Community Hall (Delia, AB). The family would like to thank the staff at Tudor Manor, Okotoks, AB for their care and compassion as our Dad lived out his final years. A special thank you to the staff at the South Health Campus, Calgary, AB for their care and respect in Dad’s final days. We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly; in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
