Mr. Jack Gallagher, a longtime resident of the Drumheller Valley, passed away on May 17, 2017 at the age of 84 years.
Jack was born in Drumheller in 1932. He grew up in Rosedale, the middle child of John and Hilda Gallagher. He had two sisters, Irene and Hilda. Jack left school in grade 11 to work on the railway as a telegrapher, which he enjoyed for several years. When he was 21 he went back to school to obtain his grade 12, then he attended N.A.I.T.’s Chemical Technology Program. He got a job with Atomic Energy in 1959 in Chalk River, Ontario, he worked there for the next two years. He went back to school at the U. of A. to get his Bachelors of Education degree. Jack met his wife, Margaret while at AECL and they married in 1962 and moved to Calgary. He completed his B.ED. and worked at Sunnyside and Banff Trail Schools. Two of their children were born there, Robbie in 1963 and Christine in 1965. In 1967 the family moved to Fort McMurray, their third daughter, Shelley was born there in 1967. The family then moved down to Drumheller in 1969 where Jack took a job with Corrections Canada at the Institution. Their fourth and last daughter, Jackie was born in 1971. Jack was a truly good man, kind, intelligent and a voracious reader. He will be missed. He leaves to mourn; his wife Margaret, four daughters; Robbie, Christine, Shelley, and Jackie, numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a lifetime of friends.
