JohnRowe

ROWE, John Shelvock

November 22, 1923 - October 7, 2016

John passed away peacefully on October 7, 2016 at the Three Hills Continuing Care Centre at the age of 92 years. He was born on November 22, 1923 in Drumheller, Alberta, the second son of Tom and Catherine Rowe of Michichi, Alberta. John was raised on the farm near Michichi, and took his schooling in Michichi while completing Grade 12 in the Drumheller dormitory High School. John loved the farm life and the strong sense of community in a family-based rural setting. He really enjoyed grain farming and operating power equipment; he tolerated the beef side of farm business; and accepted horses as being a necessary part of farming – mainly for his forefathers. John was an active farmer until nearly age 70, at which time he began renting his farm land. Dad was always a farmer from boyhood until 92 years of age! John’s passions were farming, contributing to the Pioneer Acres Museum (Irricana), restoring antique tractors and farm equipment, hockey (‘Flames and Dragons’), teaching kids to skate, teasing toddlers and grandkids, talking about the good old days, Saturday night dances to the sounds of Bob Hoy & friends, travel mainly in western Canada (but trips to Australia, Hawaii, England, Nashville, and the Panama Canal were life-time highlights too!), local turkey suppers, and always reconnecting with long-time family members and friends. John is survived by his sons, Ian (Isobel) and Lyle (Diana); step-son Ken McNair (Karen), step-daughters Bette (Ben) Thacker and Bev (Dan) Jozsa; grandchildren Ashley, Samantha (Matt), Michelle, Chris (Stacie), Ryan M. Tricia (Cody), Gena (James), Ryan T. (Natalie), Jesse (Jordan), Kyle and Sarah-Anne; as well as great-grandchildren Logan, Madison, Mason, Ryatt, Olin, Easton, Abigail, Silas, Elizabeth and Nathan. John was predeceased by his parents, Tom and Catherine Rowe in 1967; his first wife, Jean (Cammidge) in 1978; his second wife, Della (Rushton) in 2010; his brother Harvey in 2000, and his sisters-in-law, Muriel and Hilda; as well as his step-daughter, Connie Cowan, in 2005. A Celebration of Life will be held in his honour on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Munson Community Hall, with Rev. Heather Carlson officiating. Interment to take place at the Bassano Community Cemetery. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home, Drumheller, entrusted with arrangements, 403-823-2666. www.courtneywintersfuneralhome.ca.
