MASON, Albert F.

June 17, 1929 - October 20, 2015

At 86 years of age, Albert passed away peacefully at the Drumheller Health Center. Albert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Emma (Miller), their 3 children and 6 grandchildren. His son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Dawn with Laura, Kari and Jared of Delia; his son Wesley with Andrew and Steve of Red Deer; and his daughter Lori with Jesica of Calgary; as well as sister-in-law Vera King (Jim) mourn his loss. He was predeceased by his two brothers Leonard and Don Mason. Born in Delia in 1929, the son of a school teacher, Albert was proud of his local schooling. He attended Olds College, and even served as a supervisor for an area school until a proper teacher could be acquired. He joined his father, Andy, on the family farm, and when his father passed away in 1963 he carried on working the land by himself with his young family beside him. Albert married Emma Miller from the Scapa area in 1957. In 1971 they purchased a home in Delia and settled in the town. He actively farmed until retiring in 1996. In 2009 he and Emma moved to Drumheller. Albert was an avid community participant. He was involved in curling, choir, and the school board as well as an integral member of area farming organizations. The Delia Curling Club benefited from his love of the sport as he not only entered curling competitively but he was always part of the local square draw and bonspiels, served on the executive and supported and coached young curlers. He gave his time and dedication to the Masonic Grand Lodge of Alberta, the Ag Society, and was a founding member of the Delia C2000 Farm Educational Group. Along with supporting all the local social activities, he and Emma loved to travel. They drove the highway to Alaska, camped through the B.C. interior and Alberta’s mountains and prairies, and kept exploring right to the east coast. They flew to Florida, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and Hawaii, finally becoming snowbirds with yearly trips to Arizona. In later years, Albert most enjoyed chatting with friends and family; be it politics, farming or sports. He was especially proud that the family farm had endured and adapted for more than 110 years. Most particularly missed, will be Al’s positive attitude, his certain smile, and his gracious welcome to one and all. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Delia Community Center on Friday, October 30 at 2 p.m. If desired, in memory of Albert, donations may be made to the Delia Curling Club (for re-roofing) or to one of his favourite charities, STARS air ambulance. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements (403 823 2666).
