SHERRING, Hilda Phyllis

March 21, 1926 - December 18, 2014

Hilda Sherring (nee Silvester) of Carbon, AB; beloved wife of the late Frank Sherring, passed away at Drumheller Continuing Care, at 88 years of age. Hilda was born in her parents home in Littlehampton, Sussex, England and was swept off her feet during WWII by Frank, a Canadian soldier, who was stationed in Littlehampton for a short time during the war. As a British War Bride, Hilda travelled solo to Canada at the young age of 19. First by ship, landing at Pier 21 in Halifax, and then travelling out west by train to Frank’s family farm near Grainger, AB, until Frank built their home in Carbon in 1947, where they raised their family. Hilda was a Founding and Honorary Member of Pioneer Acres Plowmen & Threshermen’s Club of Alberta. She was active in the Carbon United Church and UCW. Hilda and Frank enjoyed travelling in their later years, going across Canada and the USA, as well as a trip to Hawaii, along with many trips back home to England to visit family and friends over the years. Never short on words, Hilda loved to meet people and talk about many things, but mostly she enjoyed talking about her family. Besides her husband, Frank, Hilda was predeceased by great granddaughter, Alexei Schnell. Hilda is survived by her two children, Debbie (Glenn) Knoll and Ted (Kim) Sherring; four grandchildren, Holly (Todd) Schnell, Chad (Angela) Oram, Blaine (Jill) Sherring, and Colleen Sherring; and six great-grandchildren, Kathleen & Berlin Schnell, Owen &Tracy Oram, and Fiona & Quinn Sherring. A Memorial Service will be held January 5, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Carbon United Church, with lunch and a time of fellowship at the Carbon Community Hall, following the service. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements (403 823 2666).
