SCHARFL, Elda May (Hall)
June 24, 1921 - August 25, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Elda May (Hall) Scharfl on August 25, 2014 at the age of 93. Mom was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to Annie and Richard Hall. On December 2, 1939 she married Alfred Scharfl. They had five children in Nova Scotia, then Mom left Nova Scotia to join Alfred in Alberta. She travelled by train with her one daughter and four sons to East Coulee, where Alfred was working in the coal mines. They then had five more girls and three boys, a total of thirteen children. They stayed in East Coulee until the mines shut down in 1971. Mom and Dad then moved to Drumheller, and lived there the remainder of their lives. Elda was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Alfred (in July of 1990), her mother, father, two of her brothers, one sister, her granddaughter Tereasa “Terri" Scharfl in April of 2008, and her grandson Russell Scharfl in December of 2011. Elda will be greatly missed by her children Ralph Scharfl (Maggie) of Fort McMurray, Laraine Combs of Drayton Valley, Rudy Scharfl (Marie) of Calgary, Wilfred “Whip” Scharfl of Peachland (BC), Alfred Jr. Scharfl (Margie) of Drayton Valley, Vivian Deitz (Cliff) of East Coulee, Louise Diprose (Tom) of Drumheller, Lynda Heitrich of Etzikom, Carol Ross of Calgary, Louis Scharfl of Calgary, Ken (Ruth) Scharfl of Grande Prairie, Keith Scharfl of Calgary and Denise Hawranik of Oakville (ON). She is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren and two great great granddaughters. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements. As per Elda’s wishes, a private family funeral service will be at Courtney-Winters Funeral Home on September 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Following the service the family would like to welcome friends to share in a lunch held at the East Coulee Community Hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart to Heart Society, Box 162, Drumheller, AB, T0J 0Y0.
