MICHAYLOW (NEWTON) Joan

MICHAYLOW (NEWTON), Joan
December 11, 1944 - January 18, 2014

Joan (Newton) Michaylow of Olds, Alberta, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2014.  She is lovingly survived by John, her husband of 47 years.  Joan was born in Drumheller on December 11, 1944.  She lived with her family on a farm on the top of the Red Deer River banks near Tolman Bridge until 1950 when the family moved to Rumsey so she could start school there.  Some of her fondest memories were of time spent at the Rumsey and Morrin Schools where she made lifelong friends.  Being the youngest child, and the only girl, Joan was greatly loved, cherished and protected by her three older brothers. She moved to Olds in 1963 and started working in the dental office with Dr. Hertz until his passing.  She worked in a ladies clothing store called the Betty Shop, at the Treasure Chest Jewellery Store and the Saan Store.  Joan then found her dream job working for Home Hardware and she was with them for 29 years. Joan married John on July 9, 1966.  They lived in Olds for 26 years until 1989 when they bought a quarter section of land west of Olds where they raise buffalo.  Joan loved the farm life, hand raising a baby orphan buffalo, raising goats and spending time with her beloved cats. Joan loved to garden and was happiest when spring arrived and she could be in the garden centre at Home Hardware.  Joan never forgot her Rumsey roots and was a proud supporter of the Red Deer River Garden Club.  She was involved in the activities of the Rumsey community and was more than willing to pitch in and lend a hand whenever she could. Having no children of her own, her nephews and nieces were very special to her.  They included her in every occasion they could.  They are Keith Newton (Randi, Michael,) Cindy and Jim Krywcun (Derek, Claire, Dallas,) Debbie Newton, Darcy and Donna Newton (Kali, Tessa, Brenn,) Denise and Mike Daniels (Colten, Shaylee,) Brian and Amanda Newton (Brianna, Ashton,) Teddy and Cherilyn Michaylow, Christopher and Janet Michaylow (India & Maddox,) Dustin Michaylow.  She is also survived by two brothers, Dave (Judy) Newton, Trevor (Mary) Newton and by her brothers and sisters in law, Ted (Marilyn) Michaylow, Mike (Lucy) Michaylow, Lillian (Marvin) Vetter, George Michaylow, Jean Horyn and their children. Joan was predeceased by her parents, George and Margaret Newton, her brother, Allan, her brother-in-law, Wally and her sister-in-law, Rose. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #105, Olds with Harold Hunter officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Olds Hospital Airbed Fund or S.T.A.R.S.
