GREENE, Albert Ronald (Ron)

GREENE, Albert Ronald (Ron)
January 23, 1934 - December 23, 2012

Albert Ronald (Ron) Greene passed away December 23, 2012 in Drumheller, Alberta at the age of 78 years. Ron was born January 23, 1934 in Drumheller, Alberta to Wendell and Mayetta Greene. He lived in Drumheller his entire life and was always proud to call the valley his home. As a young boy Ron was a member of the Sea Cadets and played hockey and basketball. Ron always had an affinity for the river, he and his older brother Gordon spent countless hours building and sailing their handmade boats. After grade 11 Ron attended technical school in Calgary where he played on the basketball and hockey teams. Upon completion of Tech, Ron worked with his father and brother Gordon in the family construction business, thus beginning a long and storied career as a builder.  Joined later by his own sons, Greene Construction grew to be the largest general contractor in East Central Alberta. The schools, hospitals, hotels and arenas that dot the Alberta prairie stand today as monuments to the hard work and success of the family business he was so proud of. Ron met Patricia Kennedy in high school, they married in 1954 and together they had four sons and one daughter. He was a loving and supportive husband and father and he shared a unique relationship with each of his children. Ron possessed an extremely hard and fair work ethic that he passed down to his sons and his daughter. Ron built their dream home along the banks of the Red Deer River in 1974 and lived there until moving into town in 2002. Ron and Pat enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  As a young family they spent many summers at the Fish Lake cabin with other young families, many of whom were his childhood friends.  After Ron’s retirement they enjoyed winters at their home in Arizona. Ron enjoyed curling and golfing. He loved to read and watch sports and if there was a “duster” on TV, he was usually watching it. Ron was a member of the Drumheller Kinsmen and K40 clubs for over 50 years and volunteered with the Drumheller Fire Department, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Nacmine Community Association. Almost every morning without fail he would meet his brother and their friends for coffee and he also joined his golfing partners most Wednesday evenings for dinner. Never one to sit idle, he spent his retirement working on projects for family and friends. Ron was a grandfather to nine boys and two girls. He enjoyed watching them play sports and was very proud of all of their academic achievements. Ron will be remembered by all who knew him as a genuine, humble and honest man. He was a well respected businessman and member of the community. Ron was predeceased by his father in 1986, his mother in 1993 and his youngest son Keith in 1993. Ron is survived by Pat, his loving wife of 58 years, sons Bob (Mary), Dave (Trudy), Larry (Cheryl), daughter Carolyn (Steve) and his brother Gordon, all of Drumheller. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Ron’s Life was held Friday December 28, 2012. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements (403 823 2666).
