STANGER, Albert

STANGER, Albert
December 28, 1910 - December 12, 2011

It is with much sadness that the family wish to announce the passing of Albert Stanger, our much loved husband, father, grandfather,  uncle and friend to all who knew him. Al passed away peacefully into the arms of his Lord on December 12 at the Drumheller Health Centre, 16 days short of his 101st birthday. Left to mourn are Myrtle, his much loved wife of 73 years, sons Jim (Eileen), Brian (Nancy, and daughters Diane and Marilynn (Allen). He is also survived by eight grandchildren (Robert, Michael and Stephen Saramaga; Karen, Keith and Scott Stanger; Jamie and Lori Lynn Cutler), five great grandchildren (Keana, Caelan, Radek, Mason and Ava), and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Al was predeceased by three brothers, Charlie, James and Bill, and two sisters, Mary (Mielke) and Ina (Cole). He was born in Carstairs and moved with his family to the Orkney district in 1919. While working in the Provost area, he met Myrtle and they married in 1938. They raised their family on the farm in the Orkney district. He actively supported the Orkney community and was a member of  long standing in the Orkney Athletic Association. He was a faithful member of the Orkney Presbyterian Church and served as elder and treasurer for many years. Al loved the farming life and was well known for his vegetable and flower garden. He was an avid reader of historical and political books. Al and Myrtle travelled extensively between 1960 and 1995. Their travels included five trips to the Orkney Islands and eleven to Hawaii - his favourite escape from the Alberta winters. He was known as a man of integrity and was dearly loved by his family and will be forever missed. Services will be held on Friday, December 16, 2 pm, at the Drumheller Alliance Church, 670 7th Avenue East. In lieu of flowers, donations in Al’s memory can be made to the Drumheller Health Centre, 351 9th Street NW, Drumheller, Alberta T0J 0Y1. Courtney Winters Funeral Home (403-823-2666) is in charge of arrangements. Prior to the service, a private family interment will take place at the Sarcee Butte Cemetery.
