Due to public concern, water levels of the Red Deer River are continuously being monitored during the high water level season.
The Dickson Dam is still releasing water at 150 cubic meters per second but is able to with its large capacity, allowing for a controlled stream to pass through.
“It will be continued to be monitored and hopefully we can get up to around Father’s Day then after Father’s Day it’s usually good,” said Mayor Terry Yemen.
A small amount of the influence for increase in water levels was from the Little Red Deer River as melted ice and rain from the mountains have now made its way to the river system.
“It has given us problems before – It’s a contributing factor but I think that the water normally comes out of the foothills is not as much snow,” said Yemen.
The local police force continue to check the water levels from the Gordon Taylor Bridge at night as well as facilitators from the Dickson Dam.
As heat rises to match the summer months, more water within the river systems will be prevalent.
“It’s being well monitored,” said Yemen. “So we are in the process of the spring melt right now with the warmer temperatures we’ve had – there’s obviously been some melting in the high country which attributes to the flows.”
