Despite a valiant effort from the community, Drumheller fell short by a few votes, as Port Alberni becomes a finalist for the Most Rider Friendly Community, proponents say the community should take pride in its efforts.
Anyone on social media in Drumheller from March 16-30 was bombarded by messages to vote daily for Drumheller. Some came as simple messages, while others were creative memes designed to get the vote out. Despite this, Drumheller fell short by a few votes, meaning Port Alberni moves to the next round of the contest.
Linda Buchamer of Top Rocker in Rosedale worked hard on the campaign and said Drumheller should be proud of its effort.
“What a fantastic showing from our town,” she said via Facebook. “It has been great to see such excitement and town pride! Everyone should give themselves a pat on the back for a job well done.”
Voting in the next round to crown Canada’s Most Rider Friendly Community began on April 13 and Port Alberni is up against Cape Breton Nova Scotia.
Mayor Terry Yemen, on behalf of council and the community, sent a letter to Port Alberni Mayor Mike Ruttan offering a message of sportsmanship.
“The Town of Drumheller Council and residents wish to congratulate your community on winning the Rider Friendly Community and proceeding onto the finals,” reads the letter. “As evidenced by the volume and passion of the voting, we were indeed in a well-fought battle to win this honour.”
