A Drumheller area youth will be in Calgary this Friday, October 28 to receive the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.
DVSS student Liam McDougald will be accepting the award from Her Honour Lt. Governor of Alberta Lois E. Mitchell. He will be among 25 Alberta young people between the ages of 14 and 25 to receive the honour.
The Award’s aim is to educate and motivate youth, ages 14 to 25, to become well-rounded citizens equipped with invaluable life skills by exploring their potential, taking on new challenges, giving back to their communities, and achieving success. It is a non-academic, self-directed program based on experiential learning, according to a press release.
“I worked for probably a year for all the requirements for it,” Liam tells The Mail.
Drumheller has seen recipients at all merit levels including five last spring awarded by His Royal Highness Prince Edward.
Liam has been active in the community for many years through 4H, and school and community sports. When he learned of the awards, he recognized that he could actually get credit for many of the activities he was currently involved.
For his bronze medal, his adventure was the Two Wheel View Badlands to Banff Bike trip. For his Silver medal, his trip to Europe to play hockey allowed him to qualify.
He says he has begun working on his gold medal.
