August 29, 1931- February 21, 2010
Dr. G. S. Lowen Wilson MB, Bch, BAO, MRCS, LRCP passed away peacefully at his home in Redwood Meadows on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the age of 78 years. Besides Bertha, his loving wife of fifty years, Lowen is fondly remembered by his son Alastair Wilson (Lori), his daughter Fiona (Grant Readman) and his grandchildren Alyssa, Sydney, Malcolm and Trevor; and by his faithful friend, Nicco the dachshund. Lowen is also survived by his brothers Trevor (Sally) and James and their families in Northern Ireland; and his sister Rosemary in London, England. Lowen was born in Portadown, Northern Ireland on August 29, 1931. He attended Coleraine Academical Institute and later obtained his primary medical degree at Queens University and also qualified at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in London. He worked for one year in Newtownards Hospital and at the Quoyle Hospital in Downpatrick. He married Bertha in 1960 and moved to Lisburn to enter Family Practice. Later he moved to Belfast and subsequently immigrated to Canada in 1966. He was a Physician in Drumheller for twenty-four years before opening his practice in Calgary at Springhill Medical Clinic.  Lowen served his community in a number of roles: as a school trustee in Drumheller, as a member of the Senate of the University of Calgary, and as a trustee, first of Knox United Church in Drumheller and later of Red Deer Lake United Church. He was also deeply involved in the Banff Men’s Conference of the United Church and was a life long member of the Symbol Masonic Lodge in Drumheller.  Since moving to the Bragg Creek area over twenty years ago Lowen delighted in the beautiful natural surroundings of forests, rivers and mountains; and in the wild life that visited his property. Yet he never ceased to miss the landscapes and seascapes of Ireland. He loved the water and loved sailing holidays, especially in the British Virgin Islands.  Lowen took enormous pride in the accomplishments of his family and especially his grandchildren, but above all he treasured his loving relationship with his wife Bertha. He was greatly loved and will be sadly missed by all his family. A Celebration of Lowen’s Life will be held at Red Deer Lake United Church (West on Highway #22x past Spruce Meadows) on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. You may forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.  If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Calgary Prostate Cancer Foundation at Suite 100, 1011 Glenmore Trail SW Calgary, AB T2V 4R6 Tel: (403) 212-8070 Fax:(403)212-8077 Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Lowen’s family would like to thank Dr. Ruether and nurses at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic, Dr. Mark Joyce, family physician, and the staff of Cochrane Home Care for the care given to Lowen over the last weeks of his life.
