MOE, Oddie

Odmund Alfred Moe of Morrin, Alberta, beloved husband of the late Jennie Sophia Moe (Aune), passed away peacefully on May 21, 2011 at the age of 95 years. After a long and very happy life, with his family at his side Oddie passed away peacefully on May 21, 2011 at the age of 95 years.  Oddie was predeceased by his wife Jennie in 1983. Oddie was born at Morrin on December 9, 1915 and after attending Anthill school started working on local farms. Oddie excelled in many occupations and worked in a number of trades throughout his long life, always maintaining an interest in learning new skills.  He even became skilled in computer use in his eighties.  Oddie joined the Army in late 1941 and after basic training in Esquimalt, BC served as a driving instructor in Ontario before training in motor truck repair.  He was soon stationed in England where he was a heavy motor mechanic working mainly on tank and motor truck repair.  He was one of the last servicemen to leave the UK after the war as he spent time decommissioning the repair shops before being discharged in the spring of 1946.  He then returned to Morrin. Oddie married Jennie Aune of Rowley in 1946 and began his family life.  They soon moved to Ladner, BC where he worked as a licensed mechanic.  In 1948 they returned to Morrin and rented a farm for 10 years.  It was during this time, Oddie began working in rural electrical wiring. Oddie & Jennie then bought an electrical and appliance business in Morrin and started Moe’s Electric.  Oddie continued his interest in diverse trades and held licences for Motor Mechanics, Propane installation, Gas Fitting & Furnace Installation, Rural Electric Installations, and Electronics Equipment repair.  In 1967, along with two partners he started Morrin Farm Supplies Ltd., and for many years sold and repaired farm equipment and operated a service station and bulk fuel distribution business while Jennie continued to operate Moe’s Electric as a gift shop.  Oddie was always active in community support.  He spent many years as a town councillor, Emergency Response Co-ordinator, Mayor and Fire Chief of Morrin.  Oddie was very pleased to have been instrumental in the upgrading of the water and septic systems for Morrin as well as the first paving of the roads in Morrin.  In later years, he was instrumental in developing the Blooming Prairie Lodge in Morrin and also served on the board of the Sunshine Lodge in Drumheller. Oddie is survived by his four children; David (Marg), Janis Siemens (Doug), Don (Heather) and Selma Parsons (Bob). He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and by his sister Esther Little (Harry) of Kamloops, BC. A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm on Saturday May 28th, 2011 at the Alliance Church in Drumheller with Jim Siemens officiating. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Expressions of sympathy may be left for the family at www.courtneywintersfuneralhome.ca (403-823-2666) honoured to be entrusted with arrangements.
