SLIWINSKI, Frank
March 9, 1923 - June 20, 2011

With great sorrow and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Frank Sliwinski on June 20, 2011 at the age of 88 years. Left to mourn are his wife of 65 years, Aleksandra; four daughters; Barbara (Ted) Heck, Jane (Glen) Henderson, Helen (Edward) Lawrence, and Judy (Robert Jackson) Sliwinski, 6 grandchildren; Patrick, Christopher, Laurie, Geoffrey, Larson, and Kira, as well as, 5 great-grandchildren; Allie, Sophie, Ella, Addison, and Olivia. Frank will be greatly missed by his family and friends and remembered most for his great conversations, his love of learning, and his tinkering with automobiles. Frank was born in Laszczyn, Poland on March 9, 1923 and met his wife in Germany during WWII. They were married in Hanau, and immigrated to Belgium where Frank worked in the underground coal mines. Here he developed black lung. In order to provide a better life for their family, they immigrated to Canada in 1954. Frank taught himself English through friends and by reading many, many books. His love of reading fuelled his wisdom and knowledge. Using his broken English, Frank found work as a coal miner in East Coulee, Alberta, which further contributed to his black lung. This was where his family first put down roots in Canada. Later, they moved to Drumheller, and Frank worked as a school custodian and a correctional officer at the Drumheller Penitentiary until his retirement in 1986. During his retirement, Frank and Aleksandra travelled to many warm, southern destinations and basked on sunny, sand beaches. In 2007, after 50 years in Drumheller, they left many friends and acquaintances and moved to Victoria, BC where Frank enjoyed the mild weather. No words can describe how much he will be missed. By request, there will be no service. Online condolences may be left at sandsfuneral.com (Colwood, Victoria, B.C.).
