Lee: Isabel (nee Longmate)
Isabel Lee (nee Longmate), a resident of Houston, Texas for 45 years,
passed away January 25, having lived 96 years among dear friends and
family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Wayne H.
Lee. Isabel grew up in Drumheller, Alberta. Isabel’s life ranged from the
winter snows and badlands of Alberta, where as a child she travelled in a
horse-drawn cart, to the tropical atmosphere of Houston, minutes from high
tech structures and moon-walking men. Isabel was a socially engaged person
and one who was politically astute, qualities which came with a well-known
dose of forthrightness. Those who became her friends experienced her
hospitality, her genuine concern for them, and for people less fortunate
than herself. In her youth, she worked for the Salvation Army, later
joined the Canadian Air Force in WWll, worked in a photo studio, and ran a
small paper. After moving to Houston she worked at Ben Taub Hospital as a
volunteer, contributed time to helping her DBE organization maintain an
old folks’ home, and was generous to many causes. Throughout her life, she
always welcomed a stray cat, dog, bird, or person. Isabel was also an
accomplished contract bridge player, and mentored many novices in the
game. She is survived by her niece, Sandra Macaulay Storm, whom she
raised, and Sandra’s two children, Gabe and Coryn of Edmonds, WA; her
beloved brother Leslie Longmate and his wife Margaret and their family of
Grande Prairie, Alberta, Grandnieces and nephews, three new great grand
nieces, and lifelong friends, each of whom she treasured. A visitation was
