He was predeceased by parents John and Jean, sisters Jean, Violet, brother Art and grandsons Kory and Trevor. WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE. No wonder he was so excited to start that he arrived prematurely Dec 21, 1913 with no fingernails or hair. He was oldest of 13 and has been lucky enough to have remained the respected family head of both siblings and offspring. He has seen unbelievable changes; starting from walking behind horses and a two bottom plow to driving four wheel drive tractors pulling 53 feet of cultivator and from stooking behind an eight foot binder to straight cutting crop with a thirty foot header. Always an eager volunteer he was involved in most community activities over his lifetime. His pet project was cemetery maintenance taking over from his father. Not afraid of controversy he would ramrod projects to his liking. I remember when he had the tops of the evergreens whacked off. Nobody but he saw the benefit although time proved his reasoning. Dad was a social animal and never missed a wedding in the family or any event in the area. He loved parties and listening to all the stories. Although not much of a joke teller I must relate the only joke I ever heard him tell. Two doctors are looking over a patient’s chart and the one says “Isn’t this funny, this guy is from Tofield and he had his toe removed” the other doctor said “It’s a good thing he wasn’t from Balzac or Cochrane”. He enjoyed work bees and especially enjoyed working with his grandchildren. I told my kids this was not the man that had raised us. When we worked with Dad I’d ask him before we started, to make sure he couldn’t think of a harder way of doing whatever we were doing. Dad was an avid card player, anything crib, poker, smear and although he was honest to a fault he wasn’t above adjusting the rules. Dad’s philosophy to life was “eat dessert first”. Dad attended mass regularly and was always available for whatever jobs the priests had in mind. He was a Knight of Columbus for over 50 years. He and Mom were honored to receive Holy Communion from the Pope. Dad also served as a councillor for the MD of Starland for 10 years as well as on many boards and organizations. Dad always kept notes of people’s names and addresses and whenever he was somewhere he would phone whoever lived there to say hello. In later years he would have people write their own names in the book. Whenever he entered a room Dad would look around and contrary to common practice he would go to a table of people he didn’t know and find out who they were and what they were doing there. Dad has always respected older people and visited the elderly and infirmed and in turn has been rewarded by the respect of others and by their visitations. For those whom made that effort we wish to thank you. We want to thank the doctors and nurses and all the staff at the Drumheller Hospital for their care and kindness. Also thanks to the staff at the Sunshine Lodge where Dad has spent the past year for the wonderful care and such a fine facility. Thanks to Father Mario and St. Anthony’s Church for everything. Also to friends and family for your help and acts of kindness and your attendance. And finally we want to thank MOM for her dedicated care and companionship. His life was celebrated at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Drumheller, prayers at 7:00 P.M. November 26th, funeral mass November 27th at 11:00 A.M. Interment in Delia and lunch followed in Delia. Services provided by Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Chapel, Drumheller, (403)823-2666.
