BROWN:
George Vernon
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Vern Brown,
beloved husband of Verlien for 42 years, on November 1, 2007 at the Foothills
Hospital in Calgary, at the age of 81. He was the youngest of eight children of
Hugh and Minnie Brown and was born in Cereal, Alberta on Sept. 1, 1926.
Originally from the Lanfine area (south of Cereal), the family moved to the
Craigmyle area, and ultimately settled in the Hand Hills. Vern had farming in
his blood and took great pride in his farm and cattle. Even after retirement,
you couldn’t keep him from heading up to his nephew Reg’s to help however he
could. A friend to everyone in the community, he was always ready to offer a
hand when needed. For nearly 50 years he served on the board of the Hand Hills
Lake Club, the first 34 as a director and the final 16 as President. He loved
being involved with the local Hand Hills Stampede every June and took special
delight in being involved with the building of the new Hand Hills Lake Club
House in 1981/82. Vern had the honour of opening the Hand Hills Stampede in 1999
after stepping down from his post as President. He was also Chairman of the Bull
Pound Breeders Co-op, Service Board member for Special Areas and the local
foreman for numerous years, plus many more affiliations. Sports were a great
passion for Vern, both as a player and spectator. He played hockey and baseball
for the Hand Hills Broncs teams and was an avid curler. Another love of his was
card playing. Whether it was whist night at a neighbour’s house or beating his
kids at Crib, he was always ready to deal the cards. After his health started to
fail him, first with cancer; several heart attacks; and a slight stroke, he and
Verlien moved to Calgary in 2004 to be closer to family and doctors. They found
a great condo community to welcome them and to ease the transition into city
life. He was predeceased by his mother, father, and siblings. He is survived by
his wife Verlien; son Brian, his wife Sandi and their daughter, Gabrielle;
daughter Michele, her husband Ryan, and their children Madison and Matthew;
daughter Tammy and her husband Jeff; brothers-in-law Clarence (Celia) Patzer and
Ben Mammel; sister-in-law Beatrice Howg; many nieces, nephews and cousins. The
family would like to thank everyone who sent prayers and thoughts during this
time, your support has been very appreciated. Funeral services were held
November 8, 2007 at Mountain View Funeral Home.

Raham-Siebert (Crossweller),
Dorothy
In her 101st year, Mrs. Dorothy Frances Mary Raham-Siebert (RN) passed away on
November 14, 2007. Dorothy’s departure from this world paralleled the life she
lived – peaceful, with dignity, grace and without protest. Dorothy was born in
Innisfail, Alberta on January 31,1907. She grew up in the community of Delia
where her father homesteaded a quarter section. These rural beginnings were the
starting point of her love of farming, and in particular, horses. Dorothy
attended Kelvindale School, and it was there she developed a life long love of
learning. At the age of 16 she attended Olds School of Agriculture, graduating
from Home Economics in 1925. In the fall of 1925 Dorothy moved to Edmonton where
she studied at the University of Alberta and obtained a degree in Nursing in
1928. One of her earliest assignments after graduation was the position of
Matron at the Drumheller Hospital. Later, she spent many years at the University
Hospital in Edmonton, where for some time she was Matron at the Mewburn
Pavillion caring for veterans of the Great War. In 1940 Dorothy married Alfred
Orr Raham and they settled down, and raised their family in the Knob Hill area
in Edmonton. She continued to nurse as she raised her family, ending her
accomplished career in 1967 at the Student health facility on the University of
Alberta campus. In 1989, Dorothy married Dr. William Siebert of Rosthern,
Saskatchewan, where she resided until William’s death in 1990. Throughout her
life Dorothy was deeply involved in the social aspects of life wherever she was
and she developed a sense of caring and compassion for humanity which manifested
itself throughout her life and career. She retained a strong connection with her
early life on the farm and the appreciation of community that came with that.
Dorothy will forever be remembered by her family whom she loved dearly. Dorothy
is survived by her son Gerry (Evelyn), her daughter Margaret (Richard), her four
grandchildren: Nicole, Christopher, Carrie-Lynn, and Patrick; her five great
grandchildren: Olivia, Zachary, Julia, Parker and Kuzio: niece Colleen (Dale),
and second cousin Jean Tippett. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Alfred
Orr Raham in June 1978, her second husband Dr. William Siebert in November 1990,
her parents Ethel and Harry Crossweller, her brother Raymond, and niece Carole
Crossweller. Dorothy will always be remembered as a special lady who always put
others before herself and always lived by the golden rule. A Funeral Service was
held from the Delia United Church, Delia, Alberta on Tuesday, November 20, 2007
at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Lyn Workman officiating. Interment followed at the
Delia Cemetery. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Chapel entrusted with the
arrangements. (403) 823-2666.
