ZILLI: Katherine  January 1, 1909 - February 28, 2007

Katherine Zilli, 98, passed away peacefully at the Pioneer wing of the Continuing Care Unit of the Drumheller Regional Hospital. She was predeceased by her husband Luigi Zilli, and recently her daughter Elizabeth Cook. Katherine is survived by her grandchildren Catherine Todd (David), Rob Cook (Janice), Jamie Cook (Eleanor); great-grandchildren Elizabeth and Robert Todd: Jillian, Alex and Caitlin Cook; Brendan and Reagan Cook.

Our family is filled with awe at the remarkable journey through life our loving grandmother has traveled upon and it has “made all the difference”. She has borne witness to almost a century of world history and changes such as two World Wars, the Spanish Influenza epidemic, travel in space, heart transplants and the computer age. Her life is a symbol of the immigrant story which involves perseverance, hopes and dreams, and a tribute to the heartiness of the pioneer spirit. Katherine’s adventure as a young woman began leaving Poland, crossing the Atlantic Ocean, and arriving at Saint John, New Brunswick where she journeyed by train to Trail, BC. There she learned to speak English, fell in love with Luigi Zilli and moved to New Castle and then Midland to begin another chapter of her life as a homemaker and mother to daughter Elizabeth. Katherine worked joyfully in her garden of vegetables and flowers, filling her home with mouthwatering aromas of food cooking and bread baking in the oven. Family and holiday traditions were a very important part of Katherine’s life. Everyone that knew Katherine found her to be kind and fun loving. Her greatest virtue was the ability to love her family so completely and to leave us with many cherished memories. It is through her strength and loving devotion that we honour her legacy. Our grandmother’s journey is complete, but she will never be forgotten.

A Funeral Service was held on March 5, 2007 at St. Anthony’s Church. If friends desire, donations may be made in memory of Katherine to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Room 124, Professional Building, 430-6 Avenue SE, Medicine Hat AB, T1A 2S8.
